I have worked in the environment sector since 2003, initially managing the charitable sustainable tourism project: Gift to Nature, which preserves the Isle of Wight’s nature and encourages people to enjoy it. In 2014 with a group of colleagues we set up Arc and later Artecology and The Common Space with a shared vision of Shaping Better Places for people and wildlife. In my role as Project Director my focus is on working with partners and clients to shape successful projects, whether that is an amazing multifunctional green space within their development which offers biodiversity gain and happy people or a successful planning application which protects wildlife while enhancing the appeal and value of a development space.

Ian has worked in the field of ecology, landscape and community for 30 years, beginning with RSPB and county wildlife trusts around the UK before moving to the Isle of Wight in 1993. He ran the Island’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) project until founding the Island 2000 Trust and working on arts and environment projects for the next 10 years, when the trust merged with the IW Economic Partnership to create Natural Enterprise.
Ian left to set up Arc Consulting with colleagues in 2013, providing environmental services to the development industry and has since helped to create two more companies based in Sandown Bay and focussing on ecological design, people and wildlife, and place-based regeneration. Artecology works in the field of ‘net gain’ for biodiversity and ecological design, collaborating with university and industry partners and founding the Building Biodiversity Hub at the Solent Forum. The Common Space is a not-for-profit organization focussing on revitalising the public estate and place-based regeneration.
